What if she wants to let go?
When we enter a relationship, we always make an investment of our most valued resources – our time and our emotions. We often dream that the person we chose to have a relationship with will be our soul mate, the one who will be with us the rest of our lives. Sadly not all relationships work, not all investments pay out.
When things aren’t going well as expected one may start thinking of giving up the relationship and pursuing other means of being happy. The question is how soon should one give up on a relationship that fails to meet one’s expectations? How much time should one invest on making it work?
There is no simple formula that can predict the lifespan of a relationship. Some relationships are doomed from the start (as sometimes there’s very little areas of compatibility between the partners), yet survive the test of time. On the other hand, some relationships are forecasted to be ideal and long lasting, yet only lasts a couple of months.
If it’s your spouse or your partner who decides that the relationship must come to an end,while you know in your heart that you’re not ready to let go, what should you do? Here are some suggestions which you may find helpful:
1. Communicate what you want. Let her know that the relationship is something too special to be thrown away and that you are willing to make it work.
2. Listen to what your partner is trying to tell you. Discuss ways to address the problem in a positive way and without putting blame on each other.
3. Nurture the love. When your partner starts having doubts about the relationship, find ways to rekindle the passion for each other. You can plan a holiday together or visit the places you used to love both when you were still dating. You can surprise her during the day with simple thoughtfulness like sending sweet text messages to her celfone.
4. Sometimes it may just be a money problem. When you’re faced with bills to pay, the relationship can become too stressful. Assure your partner that the situation’s only temporary and you will both find ways to become financially solvent again.
5. Pop up the question! Is it possible that the reason your girlfriend’s considering giving up the relationship is because you’ve been together too long and you haven’t talked about commitment? Maybe it’s time to take the next level and express your desire to make the relationship more permanent.
